One of the reasons I think the new GTLD’s are struggling, has to do with what I wrote about on Saturday. For the most part they’re all keyword span the dot domains. If there’s less emphasis on keyword .com domains, then there certainly isn’t going to be a huge demand for other keyword extensions.
I was always skeptical of the premise that we needed more domain options, especially when we have the ability to add all sorts of words to the root keyword and when we’re making up words for a brand. Plus there’s hundreds of CCTLD’s.
Keep in mind that I’m talking about what’s happening in the domain world as I see it, and not what I want, think is right or the best option. I sometimes wonder why companies aren’t going with more keyword type brands, or doing a hybrid strategy where the established company chooses an easy to remember descriptive domain name.
The name of the company doesn’t have to be the same as the domain. I see this more with small to medium sized businesses. A year ago I used the example of a company that sells water softeners. I have no idea what the company name is, but I remember their domain, HardWater.net. To me that keyword .net has more value to this type of company, than a made up brandable. Probably not the case if this were a national company trying to make a mark on their industry, but too often we forget that the majority of companies buying our domains aren’t global or even national companies. They’re small businesses, start-ups, local entities and someone’s undeveloped concept that isn’t close to being a real business yet.
As far as the New GTLD’s go and whether they’ll ever be a lucrative option for investors, I think the key is to keep an eye on .com sales trends. If you see the pendulum start swinging back to keyword domains, maybe then it might be worth taking a good look at NGTLD’s.
